The Netherlands is a beautiful country and especially so during spring! From blooming tulip fields, boat rides and nice cafés, to hanging out with friends along the canals: Dutch spring is truly gezellig! Below a few photos of spring time in the Lowlands for your admiration.

Many windmills in the Netherlands are actually “Poldermolen”. They are used in polder regions around the country to move water from a lower to a higher level. Traditionally they played an important role within the water and flood management systems of the Lowlands.

Idyllic

Well, this guy can actually be seen wearing only a speedo no matter the temperature!
Have a fantastic Dutch spring everybody! And if you can’t be in the Lowlands this time, make sure to plan a trip to experience this wonderful season and maybe stay for King’s Day!
i am so in love with amsterdam, it aches…
Have you ever been in Utrecht? That’s the place to be!
Nah, you better try Groningen;)
Been to the top of the tower.
Well, unfortunately I have to work all day today. So no enjoying the nice spring weather for me. Hope Friday temperature is still OK, but an other very Dutch thing is that the weather changes fast…..
The weather not only changes fast in Holland, here in Edmonton Canada, we had 17 degrees C on March 31 and the next day, April 1, we had 8 cm of snow. It was not an April Fools joke……………..
Try Vermont. I’ve lived on many continents, but Vermont weather..! In 2013, we had snow on Memorial Day, May 31st!! The first big camping weekend in New England, many in tents, and it SNOWED!! The next day it was summer again and 29°C
But spring is still beautiful…..go and visit Keukenhof!! or the mills at Kinderdijk !!
Josh Whyland: you think Amsterdam is great? Come visit the oldest city in my country: Nijmegen! And especially with the Four Days Marches in July, you’ll love that!
I thought Dordrecht was the oldest city in Nederland?
I think Maastricht is the oldest city in the Netherlands!
I really depends which measure you use:
– Voorburg founded +/- 2700 B.C. Moreover it was a roman city. However the city was not continuously inhabited, an therefore this claim is doubtful.
– Maastricht is founded +/- 500 B.C. by the Celts and has been continuously inhabited since. It later became a Roman town, but never got roman city rights.
– Nijmegen was the first real city and the first Dutch town to receive roman city rights. however the city was not continuously inhabited.
– Utrecht was the second real city and the second city to receive roman city rights. Moreover it was the second city to receive medieval city rights in 1122. It was also continuously inhabited, and therefore can legitimately claim to be the oldest city.
– Stavoren was founded +/- 300 B.C., and the first city to receive medieval city rights in 1058.
– Deventer. Already mentioned as city 952, however probably received full city rights in 1123.
By the way Dordrecht was the first city to receive city rights in Holland in 1220, but other cities in the Netherlands got it first.
Yep, today in shorts and having a blast, tomorrow Autum is back again…
Lovely. I am enjoying the mills outside the polder region. They are everywhere in the Netherlands. We do love the sun, enjoy it from the fitst shines!
Love to visit again soon , been in autumn but will be coming back in Spring maybe 2016 or 2018 have to do a bit more saving but will be there soon
All of the pictures brought back great memories of our visit last spring . We came from Canada to search our Grandchildrens’ heritage and had a such a wonderful time.
One of my favorite Dutch spring memories is seeing an old guy on a bike coming back from the outdoor market, one hand on the handle bar and the other hugging a pink blooming apple tree.
